Ball Joint

In a car, a ball joint is the spherical bearing that connects the control arm to the steering knuckle and is used in almost every car made. They resemble the ball-and-socket joints in most tetrapods.

A ball and socket joint consists of a bearing stud and socket enclosed in a housing; all of these parts are made of steel. The bearing studs are tapered and threaded and fit in the tapered holes of the steering knuckle. The protective boot prevents dust from entering the connector assembly. Usually, this is a rubber-like boot that allows the lubricant to move and expand. Motion control ball joints tend to be held by internal springs, which helps prevent vibration issues in the linkage.

“Offset” ball joints provide a means of motion in systems where thermal expansion and contraction, shock, seismic and torsional motion, and forces exist.
